DT No.1 DT Ultra 2 - Unboxing and review

DT No.1 DT Ultra 2

The return of DT No.1 to Android watches

This time we're gonna see a smartwatcht that I really wanted to review and start working with. It's the first watch with full version of Android that I review in quite some time, and from a brand that I have known for years.

Before continuing, as always, I want to thank DT No.1 for sending me this unit to review, and also I'm going to remind a little history of the brand. If you're not interested, or maybe you find it boring, you can go directly to the unboxing.

DT No.1 is a smartwatches brand that has been in this market for many years, and in the past they developed very interesting watches. Their most prominent products were their watches with a full version of Android (and not Android Wear or WearOS). Several of their models became very popular. In fact, I still have their D6, a model that they launched in 2016 and that still works. watches was the D7 a year later, after which the brand focused on other, lower-end, smartwatches. Now, after several years, they've decided to develop a watch of this kind again.

Unboxing

The box of the smartwatch is larger than they usually are in other of their watches. At the top we see the brand's logo, and the name of the model in golden letters that, personally, I liked, in addition to a series of icons and logos that shows some of the features of the watch such as its dual system, the AMOLED screen, the WiFi connection or the compatibility with TWS headphones via Bluetooth. At the base we find a box that shows the smartwatch model, the WearPro app logo and the QR code to download it, as well as a text that tells us that this is not a medical device and that the health-related data serves only as a reference and not as a diagnosis or treatment.

Last, on two of the sides we find, again, the WearPro app logo.

When we open the box the first thing we see is the manual and the watch which, as always, we will see later. The manual, as usual, is in English and Chinese, and I find it to be larger than any smartwatch manual I've seen before. Although, as it's also usual, the information it provides is not very extensive.

Under the manual we find the charging cable. This charging cable has a magnetic contact, with 4 pins. Here I must comment something: Initially the charging system was going to be wireless. But the first units sent for review (of which I received one) showed that the wireless charging system was problematic, interfered greatly with certain functions, and the battery performance wasn't good (as well as other problems I found with the watch). DT No.1, after receiving the information that I and several members of the FullAndroidWatch forum gathered, modified what was necessary (including the charging system) before launching the watch.

An advantage of changing the charging system is that this cable also allows data transfer between a computer and the watch, so we can, for example, copy files to its internal storage easily or, for more experienced users, install firmwares manually instead of OTA updates.

And finally, we find the watch straps. Yes, in plural, because DT No.1 has decided to include two different straps, in two different styles and colors. I think this is a good detail, since we can use the one we like the most or change between them depending on the moment and the look we want to give to the watch, without having to buy another one.

Appearance of the watch

When we see the watch, we realize that it is identical to the Apple Watch Ultra. This is something that has been extended not only to low-end smartwatches, but also to some watch models with full version of Android. And DT No.1 has not been an exception. In fact, from this brand and with this same style I already reviewed the DT8 Ultra a while ago, a watch with lower features than this one.

The watch screen is typical for these models, rectangular with curved edges, and has AMOLED technology. Its size is 2.06 inches, a size that is not too big or uncomfortable.

On the right side we find two buttons. The main button is also the crown of the watch. This button or crown, as in the Apple Watch Ultra, has a circle in metallic orange color. Below we have the secondary button. And between both buttons we find the hole for the microphone.

On the left side we have a third button, also in the metallic orange color characteristic of the Apple Watch Ultra. And above the button we have the watch's speaker.

Finally, on the lower side of the watch we have the contacts for the 4 pins of the charging cable, the sensors to measure the health-related such as heart rate or blood oxygen level, and the two buttons that allows us to release the straps to replace them.

The straps are obviously interchangeable, and they're compatible with the Apple Watch Ultra straps. On sites like Aliexpress or Amazon we can find a wide variety of straps, in different styles, to use with the watch. We just have to remember to choose them with a size of 49 mm.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

You can see how the watch looks with some different straps.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

One difference that this watch has with other Android watches is that it doesn't include a slot to use a SIM card. This is something that I think limits the possibilities of this smartwatch, since it forces us to use WiFi for all those Android functions that requires an Internet connection, and also makes its function as an independent device greatly impaired.

The CPU of this watch is the MediaTek MTK6737M chip, and it also has the Realtek 8763 Bluetooth chip. This combination is what allows us to switch between Android mode and Bluetooth mode.

The information provided by DT No.1 indicates that the watch has IP67 protection. This makes it clear that it's resistant to dust and water in less extreme conditions such as splashes, hand washing or light contact with rain. So my advice is to never, under any circumstances, submerge it in water. If you do it, you'll regret it.

The watch, working

To turn on the watch, we press and hold the secondary button, and not the main button or crown as in other smartwatches, for about 5 seconds. The boot of the watch is slower compared to other smartwatches, even other Android watches I have used. The first time the system loads, it will ask us to choose the language. And after that, a screen will appear in which we'll see the QR code to download the WearPro application, two buttons that inform us if the watch is paired and connected, and the option to skip this step. Although if we skip it, the same screen will appear again whenever we turn on the watch, which for some users can be somewhat annoying.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Now, before continuing, I want to explain the function of each of the buttons. When we press the main button or crown of the watch, it opens the main menu, where we can access the different options and apps. Additionally, in menus and in certain apps we can rotate the crown to move through the menu or screens without having to slide our finger on the screen of the watch.

If what we do is double-press the crown, it opens the list of apps that we have active, and we can choose which one we want to put in the foreground, close, or close all of them.

And finally, if we hold down the crown for a few seconds, it will open the ChatGPT functionality.

The secondary button has two functions. Pressing it opens a screen in which we have several buttons. With them we can enable or disable the use of WiFi and GPS and edit their settings, enable or disable the playback of multimedia audio and phone calls on the watch, switch between Android mode and Bluetooth Mode, see the details of the battery level, change the type of screen transition, access settings, turn the use of wireless headphones on or off, view the QR code to download the WearPro app and pair the watch, or make an emergency call to the police , the fire department, the ambulance or our emergency contact.

But in addition to those buttons, we have the option to edit this screen to add more shortcuts to this list or delete some of the ones we have in it.

The second function of the secondary button comes when we press it for a few seconds, and it shows a screen with different buttons. By sliding these buttons to the right we can make the watch play an alarm sound, make an emergency call, restart the watch, or turn it off.

And finally, with the metallic orange button we can, by default, open the sports application. And I say "by default" because this button is customizable, and we can modify its function so that it opens the app that we want. If we enter the Settings and open the Left Key Customization option, we have a list to choose the app that will open with said button. Including apps that we installed. This button has no additional function if double-pressed. Its only purpose is to open the specified application.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

I also want to mention that, while any of the buttons turn on the screen when it is off, none of them turn it off if we have it on (unlike many other smartwatches). So, the screen will only turn off when the time that we have specified in the settings has elapsed.

And one thing that I liked is that, when the screen is off, we can turn it on by simply double-tapping the watch screen. We have the possibility to choose that the screen turns on when we raise our wrist. But for people who like this option less (I'm one of them), turning on the screen by double tap is very useful.

Returning to where we left off, after loading the system the watch shows us the watchface that is selected by default. The way to change it is the one we already know: by keeping our finger on the watchface for a few seconds, a selection screen appears, where by sliding our finger to the left or right, or rotating the watch crown, we can choose the one we want to use.

In addition, at the end of the list it also allows us to access the watchfaces that DT No.1 has available for this watch. There are many possibilities for installing watchfaces on the DT Ultra 2, but we will see this later.

Sliding the finger down on the watchface we'll see the notifications area. Here we'll see the notifications from those phone apps that we have specified in the WearPro app, as well as notifications from the Android system of the watch and the applications that we have installed on it. In addition, when we receive a notification it's also shown in the dynamic island that the watch displays on the screen.

If we slide our finger up we access an area where, in addition to a clock, we have different widgets that offers us information about some of the smartwatch's app or options, and by tapping on them we can access the related option or app. Additionally, if we keep our finger on this area we can remove or add widgets, although by default all the ones we have available are included.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Last, sliding our finger to the left or right we can open 6 options that are the most commonly used on the smartwatch. The first of them is the Pedometer, which shows with a very simple graph the steps we have walked or run, the kilocalories burned and the distance traveled. By tapping on this screen we enter the Sports Record, where we will see a history in which we see the same graph, and several screens below that show the data related to the last 24 hours in more detail, in addition to the physical activity data that we have saved with the sports app during this period of time.

Next is the Heart Rate Monitor, which shows the current heart rate, as well as the history of the last 24 hours.

After that, we have the option that measures our oxygen level in the blood. Here, as in the heart rate monitor, we have the history of the last 24 hours available.

The next option is the Music Player. Here, by tapping the play button we can choose to play the music from the smartwatch's local storage or its resource library, and from here we can delete the music file from the internal storage. I emphasize "internal storage" because it does not play the music we have on the phone.

During playback we can pause or play the file, go to the previous or next song, and we can also activate or deactivate playback on the wireless headphones, modify the audio volume, and select the type of playback between single, repeat, sequential or shuffle.

The truth is that I found the volume of music playback very satisfactory.

Next we have another very common application, which is the Breath training. When we start it, it will ask us to relax, and after that it will tell us how often we should inhale and exhale the air.

Last, we have the weather details. Here we can see our location, the current weather and temperature and the expected maximum and minimum temperature, as well as other data such as the time of sunset or the humidity in the air.

Let's enter the menu now, and as we have seen before we do this by pressing the main button or crown. Here we have all the options and apps of the smartwatch, although some of them will only appear in Android Mode and not in Bluetooth Mode, something obvious because in this second mode they are not necessary or they would not work.

For this menu we have two types of views: The List View and the Grid View. I, personally, prefer the List View, without a doubt.

Being a smartwatch that works in Bluetooth mode with the phone, we can make calls using the watch's speaker and microphone. To do this, we must have it paired via Bluetooth, and it's recommended that we enable the option to share the contacts with the device. The way to make calls is with the Phone option. Here we have three options: use the dial pad, view the recent calls, and choose the contact.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

In the first one we manually dial the number we want to call. With the second one we select the number that we have called or that has recently called us, and in the third one we choose any of the contacts on our phone to call them. The first time we try to use the contact list it will ask us to synchronize them so that the watch can display them.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

In addition, obviously, with the watch we can also answer the calls we receive.

Personally, I find that the call audio volume (which we can modify to our liking) is high enough to be able to talk in a phone call with this watch..

In addition to calls, we can listen the phone's audio on the watch. This means that if we are watching a YouTube video, an Instagram Reel, or playing any song or video that we have stored, we can listen it on the watch without problems. But apart from that, obviously, the watch plays the audio of the apps that we have installed or the files that we have stored on the smartwatch.

In this case the audio volume, as in the music player, is also very acceptable.

Aplicaciones de deportes y salud

One of the things that smartwatch manufacturers try to highlight, and at the same time one of the things that users interested in them pay most attention to, are the app that records the data related to sports and health. Let's see what the DT Ultra 2 offers us in this regard.

In the fitness app we initially have 9 different sports with which to record our physical activity: running, healthy walking, indoor running, cycling, basketball, football, ping-pong, badminton or Jump rope. But we can add more with the Add sports button that we see at the end of the list. Here, we have 24 additional activities that we can add.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

When we choose any of the activities, in some of them the first thing the watch does is establish the GPS positioning, although we have an option to skip this step. This occurs only in certain sports such as healthy walking, running or cycling. In others such as football, basketball or ping-pong, it will not need the positioning.

Here I must warn of two facts that we must take into account. The first is that it will only allow us to perform any of the exercises in which we cover some distance if we have the GPS enabled. This is something that I think doesn't make sense, because when we have the watch set to Bluetooth Mode we will not be able to track these physical activities. And the second is that we can only obtain the positioning if we also have the WiFi connection enabled (if we are away from home, we can have the phone as an access point, and the watch connected to the phone via WiFi).

When the positioning has been obtained or we have decided to skip this step (if this is necessary), or if we have chosen one of the sports in which the positioning is not necessary, after a countdown of three seconds the watch will begin to record our physical activity showing heart rate, kilocalories burned, steps taken and distance traveled.

When we want to finish recording the physical activity data, by sliding our finger to the right the watch will ask if we want to finish or pause it. Choosing the option to finish, it will show a screen where we must confirm it, and finally we'll see the summary of the physical activity, and two buttons that allow us to save this record or delete it.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

This record is stored in the Sport Record that we had seen before. If we slide our finger up until we reach the end, we'll see the records that we have previously saved.

In addition, this recording of sports activity is complemented in the WearPro app, where we can choose between four different activities: run (indoor or outdoor), walk, cycling or climbing. Choosing any of them and tapping the "Go" button, it will show a three seconds countdown and will begin tracking our performance. Unlike its "little brother", the DT8 Ultra, nothing will appear on the DT Ultra 2 screen when we are recording this activity, but the phone will use the watch to record our steps while, at the same time, the phone's GPS positioning records the location data.

When we're done, WearPro will save this activity log and we can check it it later, where we can see the time we have spent doing the activity, the calories burned, the pace of the physical activity, the average speed, the cadence of our steps, the length of our stride and the number of steps we have taken. In addition, it will show us a map with the route we have followed during this physical activity.

Regarding health-related apps, we have several, and some of them are not present in all the smartwatches. In addition to the measurement of heart rate and blood oxygen level that we had seen at the beginning, we have the app that measures our blood pressure and shows us the detailed results of this record.

We also have the app that records our sleep, where we can see the time we've spent sleeping, and the time of both light sleep and deep sleep. I was surprised not to find it in the Widgets that appears when we slide our finger left or right on the main screen, because this is an app that I've always seen in said area on other watches.

We also have the temperature app , which shows the temperature of our body. That is, as if we had a thermometer on our wrist. In this application we will also have the history of the last 24 hours available.

Finally, we have the blood sugar application, which measures the average glucose in our blood. This app also offers the same history as the previous one.

In addition, all these health apps works with the WearPro app if we have the smartwatch paired with the phone and the app, and it stores the data from each of these records in independent tabs, in addition to allowing us to check the records of the last day, last week, last month and last year. This way, we can keep a detailed record of these data of our health.

As I have already said before, and DT No.1 also warn us on the bottom of the watch's box, these records should always be taken as indicative data, and never as a diagnosis or treatment. Some, such as heart rate or blood oxygen level, seems more reliable to me, but others, such as blood pressure or average blood glucose, I think require more specialized equipment.

Other apps

In addition to the apps and options that we've already seen both by swiping left and right on the watchface and those we just saw regarding sports and health, the watch also includes many apps that are common both on smartwatches and on Android itself. We have a recorder where, by tapping on the cassette icon, we can record voice or any sound. When we have finished recording, before exiting the application we can save the recording, or delete it.

We also have the usual Calendar and Calculator, as well as a File Manager with which to manage everything we have stored in the internal memory.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Another application that we can find is the Alarm Clock, in which we can configure all the alarms we want to sound. Likewise, we also have a stopwatch in case we find ourselves in a situation where we need to time something.

The clock also includes a countdown or timer, but in the case of the DT Ultra 2 it does not have any specified time by default, and we directly specify the time we want the countdown to last.

And in case we need to send a warning signal, we have a horn, which emits an alarm sound. Within this option we also have a button to access the emergency calls.

In the main menu we find a more complete Weather app than the one we saw on the main screen of the watch, since in addition to the data that I had mentioned, by sliding our finger up we can see the weather forecast for the current day and the next 6 days.

Here I must mention something that I think is important, and it's that the DT Ultra 2 only obtains the weather data if it is paired with the phone and the WearPro application. Unlike the apps from other watches, it doesn't obtain this data over the Internet using the WiFi connection. I think this is a big mistake, because having the option of using WiFi networks it makes no sense that the weather app needs WearPro to display the data.

The watch also includes an altitude barometer  and a compass, two apps that are always useful for adventure lovers.

In the Mobile Assistant we find two functions that are also very common in smartwatches: The remote shutter release that allows us to use the watch instead of the camera button to take pictures, and the option to search for the phone that makes the phone play a sound If we don't know where we left it.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

We also have an Internet browser that, as we see, works very correctly, although the letters may appear too small.

Of course, we have the Google Play Store app , and another additional apps store included by DT No.1, to install more applications on the smartwatch. This way, we can install applications for this system such as WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. Some apps may not be suitable for this kind of device, but others looks pretty good.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Like any Android device, we can use Google Maps thanks to GPS positioning and have all the information of the app on our wrist. Thus, whenever we enter an address we can see on the screen the directions to get to the destination we have chosen. The performance and positioning of Google Maps has, honestly, seemed quite accurate to me in my tests.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

And as I did before whern I talked about other Android watches, I want to show that we can also install videogames on this watch. Although I always say that a watch is not a device designed for gaming, we can have some installed in case at some point we want to entertain ourselves by playing.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Screen and battery

The screen, which as I have already mentioned, has AMOLED technology, looks very good and very sharp. Its brightness levels makes us see it more than correctly in any environment in which we find ourselves. But I must say that, even with the brightness at 100%, in a very sunny environment the screen does not look as good as I would like. But in any other situation the visualization is excellent.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

What I have not found so perfect, however, is the transition between screens and menus. While at some moments it's smooth, at other times it is slower. This may be due to the 2 GB of RAM it has, while the operating system is 64 bits. A little more of RAM would have been ideal, and would have solved this problem. This, although not exasperating, can disappoint users who are more demanding.

As for the battery, which is 880 mAh, I must say that it will depend a lot on how much we use it and how many things we have enabled. There have been times when the battery consumption was significantly slower, and times when it seemed to skyrocket. Without a too demanding use it can last a day, and with a use when demand more from the watch it can last much less. Charging the battery doesn't take too long. According to DT No.1, the battery charges in less than 3 and a half hours. The times I have charged it, if I remember correctly, it took between an hour and a half and two hours to fully charge it.

Esferas

As I said at the beginning when I explained how to change the watchface, the DT Ultra 2 has many possibilities to use custom watchfaces. When we select the watchface, at the end of the default installed watchfaces list we have the option to directly download them. We can also do it from the main menu in the Dial Market option.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

And the WearPro app also offers us to add new watchfaces. Through any of these three options we can access the variety of watchfaces that DT No.1 offers to install on the watch.

But the possibilities go much further. Being a smartwatch with a full version of Android, the DT Ultra 2 uses the Android ClockSkin for the watchfaces, which is the standard in this type of watches and is an open source format. This means that anyone can create their own watchfaces to install on the watch. This makes, of course, the DT Ultra 2 compatible with the Android watchfaces that I have available to download in the blog, and as you can see the watch displays them correctly.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

As I have said in many videos, as a watchfaces creator I think that the negative fact of most low-end smartwatches is that we cannot create them ourselves to our liking, and we limit ourselves only to those offered by the brand. Well, this is NOT the case of the DT Ultra 2.

Technical specifications

The specifications of the DT Ultra 2, which I have consulted with data provided by DT No.1 and compared with those obtained with the Device Info HW application, are:

  • MediaTek MTK6737M CPU.
  • Realtek 8763 Bluetooth chip.
  • Mali-T720 MP1 GPU or graphics chip.
  • Android/Bluetooth dual mode that allows us to use the smartwatch with either of these two modes.
  • 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage.
  • Android 9 operating system.
  • 2.06-inch AMOLED screen with 368x448 pixel resolution
  • Built-in GPS for positioning and geolocation.
  • 880 mAh battery.

Price and availability

The DT Ultra 2 is not an expensive Android watch, since its price is $79.99 (in Euros the price is between 75 and 79), which is below other models, although this difference is surely due to the fact that these models are much better in performance. It is supposedly available in three different colors, but it seems to refer to the color of the included straps and not to the color of the watch's body.

This smartwatch can be purchased from the official DT No.1 store and also from BuysWear. In addition, at BuysWear you have a 15% discount code available.

Conclusions

I must admit that I have mixed feelings about this smartwatch. There are things that I like, and others that I don't like at all. It is clear that it is not the best Android watch I have tried, and those of you who have read my previous articles know what it is and why it will be very difficult for someone to dethrone it. I like that it is a watch with a full version of Android, because no notable models have appeared lately and we were a bit orphaned in this sense, in addition to the fact that DT No.1 has decided to return to this market after so much time. The audio quality seems more than acceptable to me, and its options for measuring health and sports activity data aren't bad.

As for the Android/Bluetooth dual mode, I find it a very good idea to me, although its implementation is not perfect, but it's an interesting novelty.

I think the look of the watch is a right choice, because there are many users of low and mid-range smartwatches who likes this clone style that imitates the Apple Watch.

And I really liked its screen, because even though at times the transition between screens or menus is affected by the specifications of the device, its AMOLED technology makes it look very good and we can enjoy the visibility of the screen.

And, yes, I'm going to say it again: the ability to create watchfaces for this watch. I have seen users of other DT No.1 watches who always asked how they could be created, and the answer was always negative. And although they didn't like having to depend on what the brand offered, they had no other option. To those who like to create watchfaces, or having more possibilities to find custom watchfaces (there are many creators of watchfaces for Android watches), this possibility that the watch offers will come in very handy.

As for what I didn't like, there are several aspects that seem like a mistake to me. First of all, the fact that it doesn't have a SIM card slot seems to me to limit the possibilities of a smartwatch of this type. By adding this slot we could perfectly have our phone on our wrist while, for example, we go out to play sports, in addition to having a completely independent device.

The RAM also seems to me to be short, because it would have been more convenient to integrate 4 GB instead of 2, considering that the Android version is 64-bit. And sometimes we can notice the slowness due to this limitation. The 16 GB of storage may seem scarce for some users, although I personally consider that a watch is not something where we are going to store a lot of data.

As for the most serious errors, I think that depending on the WearPro app for some things limits the smartwatch, because these Android devices must keep a certain independence without being necessary to have the phone nearby. It also seems to me to be a big mistake that when we choose to monitor certain sports activities it's mandatory to have the GPS activated and also have a WiFi connection to obtain the location, because the only way to have a WiFi connection on the watch when we are away from home is by sharing the phone's mobile data, which again makes the smartwatch dependent on the mobile phone. For example, if what we want is to just count the steps, kilocalories and distance traveled (something that any smartwatch can calculate) we do not need GPS or WiFi for this.

Lastly, the battery. I think it would have been necessary to incorporate a larger capacity battery, because it can be short for many users. Furthermore, I think that the optimization of the battery is not very successful, since there are times when it seems that it barely consumes it, while at other times it seems that it empties very quickly.

In any case, it is a first step on the part of DT No.1. And I have seen that they have other models of Android watches planned, one the same as the DT Ultra 2 but with the possibility of using a SIM card, and another dual Android/Bluetooth watch with a curved screen. I look forward to trying them out and seeing how they work.

In my opinion, the DT Ultra 2 can be a good option for someone looking for an Android watch that is not too ambitious, without spending a lot on it. If what we want is something more advanced, there are other better options. Considering all this, and being somewhat generous in my evaluation, I give the DT Ultra 2 a score of 7.5.
