Huadai HD12 - Unboxing and review

Huadai HD12

A small and beautiful smartwatch with a screen that surprised me

This time I have a small smartwatch from a brand that I didn't know yet, with quite interesting screen quality and sharpness, many of the functionalities that we know from other watches, and that can be a very good choice for someone looking for a smartwatch that is not too ambitious, the Huadai HD12.

Before I start I want to thank Huadai for sending me this watch to review. I had not known this brand before, and I have seen that they have an interesting variety of smartwatches of different styles, some of them more elegant, some more sporty, and some that, due to their aesthetics, would be a very good option for women.

If after after reading this article you like this smartwatch and want to buy it, you can do it through this link:

Unboxing

The box of the watch cannot be said to be something special, since we simply find an image of the watch in the top side as well as the logo that indicates that it has AMOLED screen, the logo of the FitCloudPro app in a side, and a circle indicating the color of the watch in another side. and that's all! Unlike other smartwatches, there's no other kind of info, neither on the sides nor at the bottom of the box.

When we open the box, the first thing we see is the user manual which, as in the case of of most of this kind of watches, is in english and chinese. We could say that the manual is kinda bigger than other manuals I've seen, but it doesn't seem to provide a lot of information. Which, anyways, I don't think is necessary.

Below the manual we find the watch, which we will see later, and last we find the charging cable. it's a magnetic contact cable that has two pins. I must say that I prefer this kind of cables than the wireless charging ones that I've seen in other models, because I recently found a smartwatch with this kind of charge that turned out to have a lot of issues. So I consider this kind of charging system a good choice for the HD12.

Appearance of the watch

The first thing that caught my attention is its size, which is quite small, since it's only 40 mm, while its thickness is almost 10 mm. We can see the HD12 compared with the Haylou Solar or the WatchOut Gen2, and we see both seems slightly bigger.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

We could even say that the body of the watch is smaller than the first Zeblaze Crystal I used or the DT8 Ultra I reviewed some time ago.

And if we compare it with the Kospet Prime 2... well, let's leave aside the debate about whether size matters.

If I'm not wrong, this smartwatch is identical in design to the Amazfit Active. Looking at images of both it seems that, if they are not identical, they are at least very similar.

The HD12 information page on Huadai's website describes it as a "youth watch", and that may be the reason for this apparently small size. I do not have any doubt that this watch can be worn by both men and women, teenagers, and even kids. It will look good on anyone who uses it.

The body of the watch is quite beautiful, with curves that gives it an elegant and stylish appearance. The 1.75" screen has slightly curved edges that, in my opinion, looks very good on this smartwatch.

At the bottom side we find the contact for the pins of the charging cable, and the usual sensors to measure certain health data such as the heart rate, the blood oxygen or the blood pressure.

On the right side we find the button of the watch. And it has caught my attention that this button is located in the lower half of that side. This detail means that, if we look at the watch from the front, this button is almost not noticeable. We could say that it's designed to hide and not attract attention. This button has a red line that gives it an aesthetic touch.

Above the button we see a small hole that seems to be the microphone. And finally, in the left side we see what seems to be the watch's small speaker.

The straps are interchangeable. And being so small, the HD12 uses 20mm size straps. We can find straps of this size on websites like Aliexpress or Amazon, to give it a different look with a strap that better suits our style.

As additional information, the CPU of this watch seems to be the BT8959T5 chip, developed by the manufacturer Bluetrum. I have not come across this CPU before, but it seems to be integrated in many of the low-end smartwatches that we can find on websites like Aliexpress.

According to Huadai's information, the watch has IP68 protection, with resistance to dust and water. But at the same time it indicates that it can be used without worries in the rain or washing hands. This makes me suspect that it is actually IP67 protection. Anyways, I'm not going to risk submerging in water with this watch.

The watch, working

When we turn on the watch we see that the boot is very quick and only takes a few seconds. The first thing it asks us to do is to choose the language with which we are going to use the watch, and then it will show a screen where we can scan the QR code to download the app  FitCloudPro which is used on the phone with the smartwatch. Unlike other watches, where this is mandatory, in the Huadai HD12 we can skip this step.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Next, we'll see a new screen where we can choose between the 12-hour or 24-hour format and set the time and date. This time and date adjustment will not be necessary if we have done the step of downloading the FitCloudPro app and paired the watch with the phone, because this will set the date and time automatically.

With that, the watch will finish the first boot and will show the dial that is set by default. If we slide our finger to open Widgets or drop-down screens, we will immediately notice the good quality and sharpness that its AMOLED screen offers.

The watchface can be changed in the same way as on almost all similar smartwatches. Keeping the finger on the watchface for a few seconds we'll see a screen where we can slide our finger left or right to choose the one we want to use.

The interface of the watch reminded me a lot of the one of the DT8 Ultra, since it's very similar. This interface is divided into 4 areas depending on how we slide our finger in the four directions.

The first of them, sliding the finger down, shows a box where we can control the brightness of the watch by moving the finger. We can also see the date and time, the battery percent and the status of the connection with the phone. We also have buttons to control the phone's music, and several shortcut icons. With them we can turn on or off the Do Not Disturb Mode or the use of the watch to play the phone's multimedia audio or calls, access the Settings, activate the option to find the phone, or see the watch's information such as the MAC address, the software and User Interface versions, and the name that will show when searching for it as a Bluetooth device.

Also, as is usual in these kind of smartwatches, we have an icon that allows to use the watch as a flashlight, which what it actually does is showing a white background in the screen. I always say that a smartwatch is not very effective as a flashlight, but there may be some cases, in a very dark environment, in which this option can be useful.

Sliding the finger to the right, we'll see a small box where we can see the time and date, turn on or off the phone's multimedia audio or calls playback, open the Weather app, and four shortcuts to open the last four menu options or apps that we have recently opened.

If we slide our finger up on the smartwatch face we will access the received notifications, where we can see the notifications of those apps that we have chosen in the FitCloudPro app.

Sliding our finger to the left we'll go to an area where we have several of the watch's apps. The first one is the Pedometer, which shows the steps we have walked or run, the distance traveled and the kilocalories burned. Besides, By sliding the finger up we can see the history of the last week.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

The next one is the app  to measure our Heart Rate. In this app, sliding our finger up we can see the average frequency of our heart rate.

Next we have another very common app which is the Sleep Record, where we can see the time we have spent sleeping and the time we have had both light sleep and deep sleep. In the sleep record we can also see the history of the last 7 days.

After the sleep record we find the Weather application, where we can see the current temperature as well as the maximum and minimum temperatures expected for the day, and the weather forecast and maximum and minimum temperatures expected for the next 3 days.

And the last app we see by default is the one that allows us to control the phone's music, with the we can play or pause the songs, change to the next or previous song, and control the playback when we use these last buttons, it will increase or decrease the volume of the audio playback on the phone as if we'd use its own volume buttons, and that higher or lower volume from the phone is what we will hear through the watch's speaker.

Although I have found a fact that seems negative to me, and it's that in my tests I was only able to play the music if the music app was open on the phone (in my case, I used the Xiaomi music app). But, if the app is not open, the watch doesn't play anything.

Likewise, music can be played (although in this case we cannot control the volume) with the buttons that we saw in the shortcuts from the screen that appears when we  slide the finger down in the watchface.

The music is not bad for such a small speaker, although the volume is not too high.

Before continuing explaining other options I want to mention that, as the watch can play the audio of the phone on the watch, we can not just listen the music but also any audio such as the audio from videos that we have stored or apps like Spotify. Tiktok or Youtube. The audio quality, obviously, is the same as when we listen the music.

Last, after the Music app we have a "+" button that allows us to add or delete Widgets or apps in this area. We can delete any we have, and add others. Although apart from those that comes by default we can only add one more, which is the Sports app. Therefore, just by adding this last one we will have all the ones available. It would have been a good option to include more applications or Widgets to add in this area.

Pressing the button of the watch we open the apps menu. From this menu we can access the notifications, the Pedometer app, the Heart Rate Monitoring, the  Sleep Record, the Weather, and the Music app we've already seen. But it has many more.

When the watch is paired with the phone and have the phone's audio and calls options enabled, we can make calls from the watch using its speaker and microphone. We can make calls by dialing the phone number manually, or choosing the contact from the list. But we must previously save these contacts in the FitCloudPro app.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

I must say that the audio of the calls did not seem to me to be very loud.

We also have a Calls Log that shows the last calls we have made or received. Here, simply tapping on any of them we will call that number.

Sports and health apps

One of the things that people look at most when they buy a smartwatch is the recording of data related to health and sports activity. The HD12 has a lot of options to carry out these recordings.

First of all we have the Workout app, where we can track our performance in different activities such as Cycling, Running, Walking, Hiking, Basketball, Badminton, Soccer, Rope Skipping or walk/run in a Treadmill.

But that's not all, because in the FitCloudPro app we have many more sports to add, including those we already have available in the watch. From the app we can easily add them to the watch. The list is so broad that we can have up to 112 different kinds of sport activities.

When we choose one of the sports, after a countdown of 3 seconds the watch begins to measure our performance showing different data. For example, if we choose Walking it shows the time we have been walking, the heart rate, the calories burned, the number of steps, the distance walked and the steps per minute. Not all of this data is shown in all the sport modes, but the activity time, calories burned and heart rate are usually displayed on all them.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Also, when we finish the sports activity, the data is stored in the Workout Records app, and we can see them later or erase them.

As for health-related apps, in addition to the Pedometer, Heart Rate and Sleep Record we also have an app to measure the Blood Oxygen level.

And another app is the one that allows us to measure our Blood Pressure.

In both apps we can see more data sliding our finger up.

Once again, I want to mention that in the case of blood pressure I don't trust much the data that can be obtained with this kind of device, since I consider that a more specialized equipment is needed. But in the case of the heart rate and and the blood oxygen I do believe that, although they should be taken only as a rough estimate and not as a true diagnosis, I think that they are very close to reality.

Other apps

As for the rest of the applications, we have a voice assistant in which, after taping the button, we can use the voice assistant that we have on our phone.

We also have a stopwatch, useful for when we want to time something, and a countdown where we can choose between 1,3, 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes, one hour or two hours, or set the time we want the countdown to last.

Another app is the Alarm, where we can set alarms so that the watch notifies us or wakes us up at a certain time. But we have to keep in mind that we can only set alarms from the FitCloudPro app. We can't do it in the watch. I must mention, as a negative fact, that in the different tests that I have done with alarms I've only managed to get the alarm to make the watch vibrate, but not to make any sound.

As in other smartwatches, we also have a calendar, a calculator, the option to find the mobile phone, which will make the phone make a sound if we don't know where we've left it, and the already usual Breathing Training app, which after indicating if we want perform this training for a minute or two, it will ask us to relax and then It will tell us how often we should inhale and exhale the air.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

We also have a compass. So we can say that with this watch we'll never lose our way.

As other watches, the HD12 also has an option to use the watch as remote shutter for the mobile's camera. When we open it the phone will open the camera app, and by pressing the icon on the watch it will do a 3 seconds countdown and will take the picture.

We also have a couple of games to entertain ourselves with the watch. The first one is the game 2048, and the second is a cars game. They're not impressive games, but there we have them to play with if we are bored.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Watchfaces

Again, a weak point of this kind of watches, and therefore of the HD12, is the related to watchfaces creation. We can't create them ourselves, and we're limited To those offered by the FitCloudPro app. It's true that in the app we have a wide variety of watchfaces of different kinds and styles available, and it's updated regularly to add more. But, once again, we find that we can't create them ourselves to give them the look and style we want, choosing the info we want the dial to show, nor the type of font or hands it uses.

This is something that, unfortunately, has spread to all low-end smartwatches.

Even so, I have seen a thread on the XDA Developers forum where some users have been able to to create watchfaces for smartwatches that use FitCloudPro, and they've shared the method to do it. I'm going to take a look at it because I think it's worth a try, and if I'm successful I'll share watchfaces for smartwatches that use this app on my blog. Including the HD12.

Screen and battery

The screen, as I mentioned at the beginning, is very clear and has a quality that surprised me. I have no doubt that this watch can really integrate AMOLED technology in the screen. It looks very good in any situation and in both darker and brighter places.

The transition between screens, menus and options is very smooth and I've not noticed any kind of delay. Besides, the brightness levels ensure a more than correct viewing in any environment and with any lighting.

As for the battery, before doing this review I was using the watch for about two weeks and the battery lasted all that time, although I did not really use it excessively. Once empty, the smartwatch took about two hours to fully charge.

The information given by Huadai indicates that the battery will last about 7 days with a regular use and 14 days if not used frequently.

Price and availability

The Huadai HD12 is available in four colors: Black, green, purple and pink, and can be purchased in the Busywear website. In the description you can find the link to buy it. Its price is very cheap, because it's about 40 euros, and there's currently an offer where we can get it for about 30 euros.

Conclusions

There are several things I can say about this smartwatch. The first is that I think it has a very beautiful design, and with a lot of style. Its size makes it suitable for anyone, and since it's very light we'll almost not notice that we're wearing it. I love the screen, and I must say that it's one of the best I've tried and one of the screens that looks better.

As for the applications, they are enough for a watch with these features and they fulfill their tasks.

And of course, the price compared to other similar watches is a positive point.

About what I didn't like so much, I must say that some issues like the alarms not making a sound but simply make the watch vibrate, are negative to me. The audio on calls may be a bit low for some people, although when playing music I don't find it so low. And of course (and I say it again), as a watchfaces creator I always find it negative not being able to create them ourselves to our liking, choosing all the elements that will appear on the watchface, and being limited to what the app (in this case, FitCloudPro) offers.

Considering all these options, and given the quality/price ratio of this smartwatch, my score for the Huadai HD12 is 7.5.
