Kospet Prime 2. Unboxing and review

Kospet Prime 2

The most impressive smartwatch I’ve ever tested

This time I bring you something VERY special. It's a new watch launched recently, a few months ago, from a well known brand by the users of smartwatches with full version of Android, and that is the most impressive one I have yet seen.

And I say this because it's a watch with specifications not seen before. GIANT screen, Octacore CPU, 4 GB RAM memory and 64 GB storage, 13 megapixels camera, Android 10...

The truth is that when the release of this watch was announced and we knew its specifications, the users expectations were very high and there were many of them who purchased it before the release at the end of October. And it's not strange, knowing Kospet's philosophy to bring high quality products.

Unboxing

The box of the watch is designed in an elegant style, in black color with a pattern simulating snake skin, and the logo in golden color. In the bottom side, as usual, we find info about the watch's main specifications: The model and the brand, the color, the CPU, the OS, the RAM and storage memory, the screen type, the battery capacity, the kind of camera and strap, the material used to build the watch, and the compatible mobile networks..

When we open it and take off a protective pad we find the watch, and at first sight we already see that it's big. It doesn't have the strap on, because it comes inside the accessories box.

This box is in the right side, and when we open it we see inside the silicone strap. We also find the 4-pin magnetic contact charging cable, and a small tool to extract the cover of the SIM card slot. This tool will be familiar for us, because it also comes usually in the accessories of the mobile phones.

The magnetic contact of the charging cable seems strong enough to keep the connection stable and to not pull away easily.

Lastly, in the cover of the box we find the warranty card, the user manual, entire in english and explaining the main functionalities of the watch, and a plastic screen protector. The watch already has a protector, so we can use this one in case the one of the watch gets worn or damaged.

Appearance of the watch

The watch is incredibly big, and I say in advance that it's NOT for people with small wrists. It's also very thick, and this will probably be a negative point when it comes to choose to buy this watch. It's true that the hardware is spectacular, and that's the reason of the watch's thickness. But there may be many users who prefers something thinner.

The bezel of the watch is made with ceramic, which indicates the used material has the best quality.

The style of the watch is very elegant and, at the same time, also sporty. So it can be a device that can fit with any outfit... but it will depend on the importance the user will give to the thickness.

The first new feature is the screen: 2.1 inches which is why the smartwatch is so big. It's a IPS screen with 480x480 pixels resolution. Until now, the screen resolution (and the one to create the watchfaces for this kind of watches) was 400x400. But the watchfaces created in that size fit perfectly this watch and doesn't lose quality.

As we can see, compared with the screen of the Lemfo LEM5 Pro, the difference is obvious. It's the biggest round screen used in a smartwatch.

Probably it would have been more appropriate to use a 1.6 inches screen like the ones from other Kospet models, because 2.1 inches can be a bit excessive. There might be people who likes it, and other people who thinks it's horrible. But what is sure is that it will leave no one indifferent.

In the right side we can see the usual two buttons from the Kospet watches. The top one is used to turn on and off the watch and the screen, and the bottom one is used to go back in the menus and sub-menus.

And now, here comes the second new feature of this watch: the camera. I already mentioned in another video that I don't think a camera is something necessary in a watch, but it's a feature that called my attention. The camera rotates 90 degrees, so we can have it in its default orientation to take pictures, or rotate it to use it for face unlock or as front camera for selfies or videocalls. It's the first smartwatch that uses the possibility to rotate the camera.

The camera chip is the Sony IMX214, with 13 megapixels, so we have in the camara an advanced technology for this kind of smartwatches.

In the bottom side of the watch, which has a design simulating carbon fiber but it's plastic, we find as usual the connector for the 4-pin charging cable, the heartrate sensor, and what seems to be the speaker. As for the microphone, it's located in the left side of the watch, in a small hole we can see.

And in the right side, between the two buttons, we find the cover of the slot for the Nano SIM card, which we can extract with the small tool we saw in the accessories box. The watch offers 4G connectivity, as it's usual in the most recent models of watches with full version of Android.

Regarding the battery, we can say it's another new feature, because it's also the first Full Android watch with a 1600 mAh battery, which makes the watch autonomy be very high. Kospet claims that with a typical use the battery will last about 36 hours, while with a more moderate use it can last 48 hours.

The Kospet Prime 2 is dust and splash resistant, but it's NOT submersible.

As I mentioned, the strap is replaceable and nobody will surprise that, being so big, it uses 26mm straps. You can see now the watch with other different straps.

The watch, working

Even without starting to use it, we can guess it will have a very smooth performance. And the reason is that it's the first watch with Octacore CPU: The Helio P22 from MediaTek. This, in addition to the 4 GB RAM memory and the 10.0 version of Android, which comes for first time to these smartwatches, ensures a very high performance for a watch.

And this can be proven when we press the turn on button during a few seconds to turn on the watch because we notice the system boot is very fast compared to other smartwatches with full version of Android.

In the first use it will ask, as usual, to choose the language. And the next screen will show the QR code to download the app Wii Wear that is used after pairing the mobile phone with the watch, and will ask to turn on the Bluetooth in the watch and the phone to pair them. This is a step that we can skip.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

With this, we finish the initial setup and we see in the screen one of the preinstalled watchfaces of the watch. As always, the watchface can be changed touching the screen during a few seconds and choosing the one we want to use.

Sliding down the finger in the watchface, we have a screen that will be familiar to the users of this kind of watches, because it shows the Bluetooth and 4G status, as well as a button to turn on and off the Airplane Mode. The same screen shows the time, the date and the battery level.

In this screen, if we slide the finger to the left we see two more screens. In the first one we have some shortcuts to turn on and off the WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and mobile data, modify the brightness, and turn on and off the Do Not Disturb Mode and the option to turn on the screen shaking the hand. And the next screen shows a button to close the apps we have in the background.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Sliding up the finger in the watchface, we find the pedometer info where we can see the number of steps, the burned kilocalories, and the walked distance. It also shows a very complete history with the steps and distance from each of the last 7 days, and the total amount of steps, distance, and kilocalories burned on those 7 days.

In this screen, sliding the finger to the left we access to a music player, and also to the weather info where we can see the current temperature, the minimum and maximum expected temperature, the air humidity, the sunrise and sunset time, and the weather forecast for the next 6 days.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

If we slide the finger to the right in the watchface we find the notifications screen, where we can see all the notifications received in the watch.

Lastly, sliding the finger to the left in the watchface we access to the Android menu, and the sports or fitness app.

Also, pressing the turn on/off button during a few seconds, we see an options menu where we can choose to see the apps in the whole screen or in square format, turn off the watch or restart it, activate the Power Save mode, or closing the apps we have in the background.

This Power Save mode activates a watchface with black background and white text and numbers that shows the battery percent, the time and date, and a button for the settings of this Power Save mode. In this mode, the Airplane Mode is turned on too. To turn off this mode, we'll press again the turn on/off button during some seconds, and we'll choose the same option.

Android menu and apps

In the Android menu, we have all the usual apps we can find on this OS like the phone, the contacts, the SMS messages, Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, the file manager, the alarm or the calendar, among other.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

As always, Kospet includes their own apps for the watch like the one they call "App Store", where we can download and install widely used apps, the Assistant to pair the watch with the phone and control some of its functions, or the Optimization.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

We also have an app called "Watchface Store", which shows us a wide collection of watchfaces to install and use in the watch. We can also access to these watchfaces through the Wii Wear app in the mobile phone.

As we can access the Google Play Store the watch can, as any Android device, install apps for this OS. As I always say, some apps will not be very suitable to use in this kind of devices, but other apps can work very well.

So we can use apps like WhatsApp or Instagram, that despite the screen size can be displayed very well. The Internet browsers also runs pretty well in this watch.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

The YouTube videos, as well as the videos stored in the watch, can be watched without any problem and very smoothly, since the excellent CPU and the more than enough amount of RAM helps the multimedia content to be perfectly played.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

And as in all the Android devices, we also can install videogames. This is another thing I always say: a watch is not a device intended to play videogames. But anyways, many videogames can run in this watch. So, we can have some videogames installed to use it in some moment we want to be entertained, and have it available in our wrist.

Sports and GPS

As usual, the Kospet Prime 2 includes a heartrate monitor, that we can use to check our heartbeats per minute, and an app to monitor the physical exercise, where we can choose different activities like outdoor run, outdoor walk, indoor run, ride bike, basketball, futbol (soccer), ping-pong, badminton or rope skipping.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

In this model, we have two ways to access to this app. The first one is the one we already mentioned, sliding the finger to the left in the watchface, after the Android menu. Here we can set goals for our physical activity like the time, the distance to cover or the kilocalories to burn.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

The second way is through the Android menu. In this way, we can also turn on the option to use the GPS positioning.

And if we talk about GPS, we must of course mention the possibility to use Google Maps and have all the info in our wrist. Google maps runs perfectly, and every time we enter an address we can see in the screen the indications to get to our destination.

Camera

The camera, as I said before, calls our attention because it can rotate. This makes us able to use the same camera for selfies, videocalls or face unlock, or as camera to take pictures, which eliminates the need to have two different cameras in a watch.

When we open the camera app we see the image seems to be upside down. It happens because, by default, the image orientation is set for the use as front camera. We can change this with a button we can see in the screen, to set the image orientation for the use we want to give to the camera.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

The camera options are kinda basic, but they're enough to use it.

The pictures made with the camera don't have bad quality. Actually, I was surprised because I expected a lower quality in a camera intended for a watch. But the truth is it fulfills its function and can be used for some pictures we want to take.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

Obviously, we can't expect it to be equal to an advanced camera from a mobile phone. But as camera for a small device, it's not bad at all.

And if what we want is to record video, we can also do it with this watch, but I must say the watch will heat up a lot more. After all, a watch should not be a device we use for this kind of task.

Screen and battery

To check the battery duration I made some simple tests and I've been pleasantly surprised. The first one was done with SIM card in the watch, and with the GPS and mobile data turned on all the time, and the battery lasted a bit more than 72 hours. In the second one, adding the WiFi to the turned on options I used before, the battery lasted around 48 hours.

Therefore, we can say with a moderate use the battery can reach 36 or 48 hours. Obviously, using other functions like the Bluetooth, downloading a big amount of data, playing music or videos, or GPS maps in real time, the watch will empty the battery faster. But among the watches with full version of Android I've used, it's the one that had a longer battery duration.

As for the screen, I can say it can be seen very well even in bright conditions, although it's possible that sometimes we'll have to increase the brightness, but it's not usual. In darker conditions or with artificial light, we'll experience no problems. The transitions between screens and menus are very smooth and we'll not find any kind of delay.

(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)(Click to enlarge)

And obviously, being such a big screen, everything is spectacularly displayed.

And as I always say when I review a watch with full version of Android, the Kospet Prime 2 is compatible with the installation and ussage of watchfaces in ClockSkin format. So I'm sure that everyone who has this watch can find and download in my blog some watchfaces he'll like.

Price and availability

I must say that this is NOT a cheap watch due to its size, the hardware and the functionalities. So we could say that if there's a negative point in the Kospet Prime 2, it's the price. But we must not forget that this is a device that belongs to the highest range of watches with full version of Android.

The watch is available in online stores like Aliexpress or Gearbest. In Aliexpress the price in the Kospet official store is 180 Euros, and in Gearbest the price in the Kospet official store is 177 Euros.

Conclusions

With such a spectacular watch, I think there's not much to add. It's, without a doubt, the best smartwatch I've tested, and this is due to the impressive hardware, the huge screen, and the possibilities.

The only drawbacks are very obvious: the price, very expensive, and the size, very big. Although I must say I've got used very fast to this watch and didn't feel uncomfortable at all.

And the advantages are also obvious: the spectacular screen, the CPU that ensures and excellent performance, the RAM memory and the available storage amount, the long battery duration... It's clear that  the advantages outweighs the drawbacks.

Personally, I think Kospet have reached their peak with this watch, because I think it's very difficult to overcome its specifications. I don't think that there can be watches with a bigger round screen than this one... well, of course it's possible, but then it would be too big and uncomfortable, so it's not adequate. And although the RAM and storage memory can be increased, I don't think it's necessary in a watch. What I'm sure it's necessary to keep working on, is to increase the battery duration, because it's something very important in devices with full version of Android.

When I reviewed the Kospet Prime SE a few months ago I said that it was a beast, but I think I was wrong. Or, if the Prime SE was a beast, then the Kospet Prime 2 is Godzilla.

I have no doubts that the Prime 2 is the most impressive smartwatch I've ever had in my hands, and it will very difficult to overcome this watch.

For all this, despite the two drawbacks I've mentioned, this is the first smartwatch (and I don't know if I'll ever do it again), that I rate 10/10.
